You'll find, in SJDS, numerous pharmacies selling cheap generic drugs imported from numerous countries. Most of the same over-the-counter drugs as in the United States, as well as those that require a prescription, are available cheaply and without a doctor’s note in Nicaragua. Be sure to know the scientific name of your brand name prescription as most pharmacists will only know the drug by the former identification. Nicaragua has arguably the cheapest medications in Central America and prescription drugs cost between $10-20.
NEW HOSPITAL
October 2016 saw the beginning of the estimated 13-14 month construction of a new 30 bed Primary care hospital (to the left). The hospital, named “Hospital Primario Gaspar Garcia Laviana” will include departments of internal medicine, general surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, anesthesiology as well as provide emergency services, laboratory examinations, and labour/delivery services.
At a cost of approximately just over 4 million USD, the hospital will provide comprehensive care to the public, saving many people from the two-hour trip to nearby Managua. This hospital is a short taxi ride from SJDS.
